“The only difference between a nonreader and a reader is that a reader has a plan for future reading and a nonreader does not.”
Donalyn Miller, author of “The Book Whisperer” and “Reading in the Wild”
Time flies. There probably isn’t a truer adage than that. It seems like only yesterday when the year turned, yet here we are - thirty one sunsets in.
How are we doing with our reading resolutions, dear reader? Are we well underway? Are we unable to keep up or set aside time? Are we unsure about what to read? Remember, wherever we maybe, the best time to start is now and the best place to start is Sanu Ko Pustakalaya (😉).
Okay, set aside reading resolutions and goals for a hot minute. Lets just focus on the ‘reading’ part. What if you could take this thing that you love and love it more? Here are a few ways to read a little bit better while we still have eleven months in hand.
📖 Choose the Right Book
Instead of randomly picking up books and DNFing them or sliding into a slump, take some time and ask yourself a few questions before you decide on your next read.
Are you curious about any particular topic? Is there a book that a friend really loved and recommended? Do you want to be part of the conversation around the latest hyped books? Do you want to to read books similar to the last one you enjoyed?
Whatever your answer maybe, try to focus on one book or genre for this week or this month.
📖 Read Deeply
At a time when most of us read in bite-size chunks — texts, tweets, emails — it can be difficult to retrain your brain to read at a deliberate pace.
Notice if you tend to skim lines or sections. Reread. Highlight paragraphs and take notes. Summarise and review.
📖 Variety is the Spice of Life
Mix in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, biographies, anthologies, essays. Lighten up your reading from time to time. Pick up a children’s book, maybe? (I can’t recommend this enough!)
📖 Take it Further
Go into a rabbit hole. (Yes, like Alice!) Let your current read guide you towards writers and genres that you might end up bingeing.
Create a book journal or reading log - something physical that allows you to be creative and motivates you to keep going.
📖 Read Outside the Box
If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.
Haruki Murakami
It’s easy to get caught up in new releases and ‘trending books’. Explore your library to bump into titles that are timeless and distinctive, as well as current and contemporary.
